The Fens East Peat Partnership
Role: Landscape Architect
Clients: Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
The Fens East Peat Partnership (FEPP) is made up of six partners: Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (Lead Partner), National Trust, Natural England, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, RSPB and the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.
Blue Green Studio worked with 35percent and RM Wetlands&Environment to re-wet peatland across three separate sites - Burwell Fen, Tubney Fen, and Oily Hall.
Historically, agricultural drainage across the fens has caused peat to dry. When peat dries out, it becomes more susceptible to degradation and decomposition, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere. It also becomes susceptible to erosion by wind and water. The Holme Fen posts are a stark reminder of how much peat we have lost. By re-establishing a locally high groundwater level, the carbon that is within the peat is preserved, and the rich biodiversity associated with healthy peatland landscapes can re-emerge.
