The Great Fen Visitor Centre
Role: Landscape Architect, SUDS and Wetland Habitat Design
Clients: The Wildlife Trust BC&N
This was a partnership project with 35percent, RM Wetlands, and Blue Green Studio, to create a unique visitor centre landscape at the heart of the Great Fen masterplan area. The Masterplan (2010) set out plans for 14 square miles of
land restored to wild fen, creating a significant nature recovery network.
The design was phased, with planning permissions granted for phase 1 (landscape and wetlands) in 2024.
Phase 1 of the scheme proposes:
Visitor access and parking with sustainable drainage (swales, wet channels, bioretention features, wet woodland).
Wetland habitat demonstration areas for visitors (derived from NVC habitat)
Enhanced walking routes, bird hides, and sensory spaces.
A 1.4 hectare open water body/reservoir
6.62 ha of wetland habitat, including -
3365 sq m of reed habitat
1809 sq m of wet woodland
640 linear metres of willow grove (Salix viminalis) 1050 sq m of specialist wetland habitat
